We went for a walk up Glen Quharity last year and met the landowner along with a group of people so, Intrigued, I asked what they were doing. They were re-routing the Burn to improve water flow to the reservoirs, he went on to explain that a lot of work had been done all over the estate, the wood nearby had been planted and protected to encourage wildlife such as the Merlin
I thanked him for sharing that info and went off to research the Merlin and forgot.
Fast forward to January this year, 2024.
I'd spotted a small Kestrel-like bird a couple of times, flying along the top lane just above the treetops and assumed it was indeed a Kestrel until I got some photos.
I'd stopped the car and was scanning the horizon with the binoculars when I saw a Corvid and a smaller bird battling it out a mile or so away. I grabbed the camera and long lens to try and capture something, see what was going on.

Distant Corvid & Falcon

I got quite a few shots so I edited them and shared them on Birdforum for ID and it came back as a Merlin! I was well chuffed, never having seen one before, even though it was at long distance, maybe I'll get lucky with some closer shots one day.

Many thanks Barry!
The two had a battle royale and I was surprised to see the Falcon turn and see off the Corvid, maybe not as surprised as it was?
